Creating An e-Portfolio and Reflection Journals Using WordPress

During the first week of classes in my graphic and web design courses, each student is asked to create a free WordPress e-Portfolio to display their learning and facilitate social collaboration between their peers, instructors, and industry professionals. Through the power of WordPress, students can share their projects and experiences, reflect on their program/course learning outcomes and build networking skills throughout the year.
WordPress Learning Outcomes
During our in-class workshop, you will learn and discuss how to use WordPress to write, post and share your progress and projects with your peers, faculty and industry professionals. Our workshop will include:
- Setting up a free WordPress.com site
- Choosing a theme
- Creating Posts
- Creating Pages
- Creating Navigation menus
- Writing/editing posts
- Adding multimedia
- Adding a poll or survey
- Following and commenting
- Social Sharing
- Using the WordPress Mobile app
- Notifications
How To Sign Up for WordPress
Log on to wordpress.com in your favourite web browser to begin.
- Click on ‘Get Started’.
- Select a blog style and name
- Choose a site type and a theme.
- Pick a domain name (web address) ie: yourdomain.wordpress.com.
- Choose free hosting.
- Enter a password and confirm your registration via email.












WordPress Dashboard
Within the WordPress Dashboard you can create and edit blog posts, pages, themes, and collaborative tools such as social sharing, discussions and follower notifications. The Dashboard is divided into three main sections; publish, personalize, and configure. An advanced Dashboard can be accessed by entering the following URL: yourdomain.wordpress.com/wp-admin


Create a Post in WordPress

Log in to your blog yourdomain.wordpress.com/wp-admin
- Click on ‘Add Post’.
- Add a title.
- Add some text.
- Add media such as hyperlinks, images, video, and audio.
- Enter meta-data, tags, a feature image and publish your post.
Create a Navigation Menu in WordPress

Log in to your blog yourdomain.wordpress.com/wp-admin
- Hover over ‘Appearance’ and choose menu.
- Choose primary menu and select its position.
- Select menu items or add custom links.
- Add selected categories, links or page items to your menu.
- Save your menu and preview your blog. yourdomain.wordpress.com
Install the WordPress Mobile App
Search ‘Wordpress’ in the App store for iOS or Google Play Store on Android.
- Install WordPress App.
- Enter in your domain URL and Enter your password.
- Create posts, read posts, comment or share posts from followers.
- Allow push notifications to receive updates from followers.
