I’ve always wondered why Adobe Illustrator placeholder text never existed. In addition to InDesign, I work with type frequently in Illustrator and always wanted this option; as I found myself always having to have a text document open or webpage available when working with layouts and mockups (http://meettheipsums.com).

Adobe Illustrator Placeholder Text Script

I recently came across this cool script from SellingGraphics.com (<— You can download the script there, along with installation instructions.) I’ve modified the contents of the script by opening the .jsx file in Brackets.io and replacing the default lorem ipsum with my own placeholder text.

This script is a great time saver for designers who want to add placeholder text when prototyping print or web layouts using Adobe Illustrator CC. The script should also be compatible with older versions of Adobe Illustrator.

Adobe Illustrator Placeholder Text Script Installation

1. Download the script from SellingGraphics.com or my version below to your HDD (Hard drive).
2. Unzip and copy the LoremIpsum.jsx to Illustrator’s Script folder MacOS: (Macatosh HD\Applications\Adobe Illustrator (version)\Presets\en_US\Scripts) or Windows: (c:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator (version)\Presets\en_US\Scripts).
3. Restart or Launch Adobe Illustrator
4. Create a new document. Create a text frame by dragging an area text box with th etext tool.
5. Go to: File > Scripts > LoremIpsum. After that, your text field will be filled with placeholder text.
