GDPW0912: Composite One – 3 AD Campaigns

After the completion of the first five weeks of the Graphic Design for Print & Web program, my students were asked to develop the first of their three major composite projects of the year. The first one being an advertising campaign that includes developing three unique advertisements that are to be published in a magazine of their choice – based on their intended target market. The students can choose to develop a campaign for a product, service, event or social cause and also had to research the demographics of their target audience.

Their ads were to run in consecutive issues of the same magazine, or in consecutive spreads of one issue, which is known as a “reveal” ad.

GDPW0912: Typography Poster Art Projects

This year, my Graphic Design for Print & Web students created a general publicity poster for one of three available events that were taking place in the GTA this year. They were to be posted outdoors, in shop windows, construction hoardings, etc. – wherever their target audience may see it and be encouraged to participate and or attend the event. They had the choice between designing a poster for Wordcamp, Nuit Blanche or The Toronto Fringe Festival.

The students were to use their design and typesetting skills for this assignment, while exploring the use of page grids and modular relationships – with particular attention given to proportion, visual hierarchy, texture and tone. They also had to pay attention to the graphic qualities of characters, their form and structure. In addition, they applied contrasting typefaces and qualities of the typeface(s) chosen by means of size, weight, direction and colour.
